The Ruta del Jefe is returning to Patagonia, Arizona, next spring for four days of exploration, education, camping, and community—and we are proud to be an official partner. Given that it's taking place in our own backyard, we've decided to go the extra mile or so (85 of them, to be exact) with an overnight group ride to the start of the event.

Join us for the Tout Terrain Route to Ruta del Jefe, a two-day warm-up ride from Tucson to Patagonia, March 31–April 1.

What to bring

Enough food and water for two days is crucial. There are limited resupply options along the way, although water is available at camp at mile TBA. Pack camping supplies, warm layers for the evening, and anything else you might need for the following days at the event.

Important

The Route to Ruta del Jefe follows a mix of paved and unpaved roads and trails, so we recommend a minimum tire width of TBA mm. This is a self-supported ride, and riders are responsible for their own supplies and safety and should act accordingly. Good vibes and positive attitudes are welcome. Reckless riding and disrespect toward nature and fellow riders are not.

Extra importantRiders must plan their own return trip after the event—be it back to Tucson or onward to other adventures. If you'd like to coordinate a carpool, a carpool board is coming soon. If you'd like to book a shuttle service, reach out to TBA. Or simply ride back on your bike.

Waiver

All riders sign the participant waiver when they register. You can read it in full here before signing up.

Please read carefully. This document affects your legal rights. By signing, you confirm that you understand and agree to its terms.

1. This is a self-supported ride

I understand that the Route to Ruta del Jefe (the "Ride") is not a guided, supported, or supervised event. I understand and agree that:

  • There is no ride leader, sweep rider, mechanical support, medical support, or support vehicle.
  • No one is obligated to wait for, assist, or look out for me, and I am not obligated to do so for anyone else.
  • I am solely responsible for my own food, water, clothing, shelter, camping gear, navigation, tools, spare parts, first aid supplies, and emergency planning for the full duration of the Ride.
  • Resupply options along the route are limited, and water may not be available except at the locations the Organizer has listed. I am responsible for carrying enough to reach the next reliable source, plus a reserve.
  • I am responsible for getting to the start and arranging my own transportation home or onward after the Ride.
  • The Organizer's route, maps, and information are provided as a courtesy. They may contain errors, may be out of date, and are not a guarantee of safe or passable conditions.

2. Risks I understand and accept

I understand that bicycle riding and camping in remote areas of southern Arizona carry inherent and significant risks, including but not limited to:

  • Collisions or falls, including with vehicles, other riders, animals, or objects, and injuries from rough, loose, steep, washed-out, or unmaintained roads and trails
  • Equipment failure and mechanical breakdown in locations far from help
  • Extreme or changing weather, including heat, cold, wind, rain, flash flooding, and lightning; late March and early April nights may be near freezing
  • Dehydration, heat illness, hypothermia, exhaustion, and other medical emergencies
  • Wildlife and plants, including snakes, insects, and cacti
  • Limited or no cell service, and delayed or unavailable emergency response and evacuation
  • Traffic on paved and unpaved roads
  • Contact with law enforcement or Border Patrol, who operate in this region
  • The actions or negligence of other participants, landowners, or third parties

These risks can result in serious injury, illness, property loss, or death. I have chosen to take part with full knowledge of them. I may also face risks that are not listed here or that no one can foresee.

3. My responsibilities

I agree that I will:

  • Ride within my own ability and use good judgment, and turn back or stop if conditions or my condition require it
  • Wear a properly fitted helmet at all times while riding
  • Follow all traffic laws, posted signs, and land-use rules, and respect private property and closures
  • Follow Leave No Trace principles and treat the land, wildlife, and communities along the route with respect
  • Camp only at the designated camp location, unless I am otherwise permitted
  • Carry a charged phone and a downloaded offline copy of the route, and consider carrying a satellite communicator
  • Treat other riders respectfully and avoid reckless riding
  • Follow any updates, route changes, or cancellations the Organizer communicates

I understand the Organizer may ask me to leave the Ride at any time if I act unsafely or disrespectfully, and that I will not be entitled to any refund or assistance.

4. Health and fitness

I confirm that I am physically fit and have no medical condition that would make participation unsafe for me or others. I understand that I am solely responsible for deciding whether I am able to take part, and for any medical care I may need during or after the Ride.

5. Assumption of risk

I voluntarily and knowingly assume all risks of participating in the Ride, whether or not they are listed above, and including risks arising from the ordinary negligence of the Released Parties (defined below) to the fullest extent permitted by law.

6. Release and waiver of claims

In exchange for being allowed to participate, I, on behalf of myself and my heirs, executors, personal representatives, and assigns, release, waive, and discharge the Organizer, Tout Terrain, Ruta del Jefe and its organizers, and their respective owners, officers, employees, volunteers, partners, sponsors, and agents, and any landowners or land managers whose property the route crosses (together, the "Released Parties"), from any and all claims, demands, and liability for injury, illness, death, or loss of or damage to property arising out of or related to my participation in the Ride, including claims based on the ordinary negligence of the Released Parties, to the fullest extent permitted by Arizona law.

7. Indemnification

I agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Released Parties from any claims, costs, or expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) brought by anyone else that arise from my own acts or omissions during the Ride, to the fullest extent permitted by law.

8. Emergencies and medical care

I understand that emergency response may be slow or unavailable. If I become injured or ill, I authorize the Released Parties, though they have no obligation to do so, to seek emergency medical assistance on my behalf. I am responsible for all costs of any medical treatment, evacuation, or rescue, and I confirm that I have my own health insurance or will pay these costs myself.

9. Photo and video

I grant the Organizer permission to use photos or video taken of me during the Ride for promotional purposes without compensation. (Riders can opt out on the sign-up form.)

10. General terms

  • I am at least 18 years of age.
  • This agreement is governed by the laws of the State of Arizona.
  • If any part of this agreement is found unenforceable, the remaining parts stay in effect.
  • This agreement applies to the Ride and to travel between the start, the route, the camp, and the finish.
  • I have read this entire document, I understand it, and I am signing it voluntarily. No promises or statements have been made to me other than what is written here.

See you on the road to Patagonia.
