Nationality: American
Favorite terrain: Can I say all? Mixed? Ok, singletrack is my favorite, but I love a long climb on gravel.
Gadget: Long handled titanium spoon—most gadgets are too heavy.
Food: Chile relleno burrito
Experience: Touring the Colorado Trail is a hoot. I particularly remember descending Koko Pass in the rain. Crashed into a snowbank part way down and laid on the snow laughing until my riding partner caught up and did the same thing.
Short bio
I’m Matt Mason, 45 years old, and I live in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Bikes have been a part of my life since I learned to ride more than forty years ago. Daily neighborhood rides with my family slowly evolved into longer trips by bike, commuting, and eventually a little mountain bike racing.
After moving to New Mexico fifteen years ago, I dove into route creation and event organizing. Hosting weekly rides, two bikepacking events, and a gravel century every year led me into bicycle and public lands advocacy. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Bikepacking Roots and Outdoor Alliance to grow a more diverse cycling community and protect the places we ride. All of my passion, creativity, and energy for advocacy rely on me putting in miles on the bike, ideally in the dirt, so that’s the best place to find me.
